Meet the Carer: Savanthie Dias

Entrusting your loved one’s care with our team at Adventist Aged Care is a great privilege and responsibility for our carers.

In our Meet the Carer series we get to know the people behind the scenes who care for our residents and run our day-to-day operations.

In our second instalment, we’d like to introduce you to Savanthie Dias, Director of Care, Adventist Aged Care Kings Langley.

Tell us about your role and how you came to Adventist Aged Care Savanthie?

“I’m the Director of Care at Adventist Aged Care in Kings Langley, and I’ve been working here for eight years. Aged care is something that’s really heartwarming –  to be in someone’s life, to make a positive difference. Not on a day only, but their whole quality of life.”

What’s the best thing about your job?

“The best thing about my job is, I would say, every day is a different day. What I really enjoy is seeing my staff interacting with our residents, doing activities, and the personal connection with residents. Because I live 40 minutes away, I drive every day. But sometimes people ask me, ‘why don’t you find somewhere closer to home?’ I do love working in Adventist Aged Care. I like the people I’m working with and the residents. The environment, the people. And they do appreciate the work you do, too. It’s not an easy job.”

What’s the hardest thing about your role?

“The hardest part is when you have to give support to grieving residents’ families. When their loved ones are declining, they need someone to listen to them and hold their hand, so that’s a bit hard. At the end of the day, once they come under our care, it’s our responsibility to make sure they’re safe in every way, emotionally, physically, and financially as well.”

What is the biggest misconception about aged care residents?

“The biggest misconception is, we think they’re old people, they have no life experience. But I think that’s wrong. When you interact with the residents here, you will understand them. You’ll see how interesting and dramatic some lives have been. I think they need to write books about their lives and I’m sure we can learn a lot from them.”
