Love Story: Brian & Carolyn Harriss

Some people may struggle with the idea of loving someone for their entire life.

Others want nothing more.

Brian and Carolyn Harriss, Independent Living residents at Adventist Aged Care Wahroonga, fall into the latter category.

We sat down with Brian and Carolyn as they break down how they met, and their whirlwind lives together ever since.

How did you both meet?

Prior to the age of apps and online dating, it was all about that first meeting. Brian and Carolyn first met each other at a dance.

“My friend came up to me and pointed Brian out and told me to ask him to dance. I didn’t really want to at first, but I did – I’m really glad that I did”, said Carolyn.

“I had a little bit to drink. She said, ‘would you like to dance?’ I said ‘no, I can’t because I got two left feet’, Brian laughs.

It was love at first sight – for Brian, at least. Carolyn took a little longer to warm up.

“I didn’t click with him instantly. I had just come out of a relationship before that which left me feeling wary, so I was hesitant to say the least”, said Carolyn.

“Meanwhile, I went straight home and told my mother I’d just met the girl I was going to marry”, Brian reminisces.

What are some of your happiest memories together?

Understandably, Brian and Carolyn treasure the birth of their first child.

“It was our first child after trying for six years. Safe to say, words can’t even explain how special that was for us”, said Brian.

Brian and Carolyn were also lucky enough to have a surprise party thrown for their 50th wedding anniversary by their son.

“Our son kept telling us we were having afternoon tea but he wouldn’t tell us where it was. We were on our way, along the Pacific Highway, and our friend drove past the church we got married in. He asked if we would like to get a photo in front of the church, and we got out to find all our friends inside the church hall where we were married”, recounts Carolyn.

Brian and Carolyn were surprised – pleasantly so.

How have you managed to stay together for so long?

The pair have some top tips on how they’ve managed to stay together and in love for as long as they have.

“I think we just love each other. We don’t fight, we don’t raise our voices to each other. Every morning, Brian gives me a kiss on the forehead and sings to me. It’s like a half-dead bird, but I wouldn’t have it any other way”, remarks Carolyn.

Brian had his own cheeky methods to keeping peace in the Harriss household.

“Don’t argue with her. She is always right. If you keep telling yourself she is always right, you won’t have any problems. That’s the best advice I can give”, laughs Brian.
